It can feel all but impossible to respond to an act of violence too senseless to truly understand, but that isn't stopping the "Dark Knight Rises" stars from trying.
As a stoic, fiery-haired James Holmes, the suspect in the Colorado movie theater shooting, made his first appearance in court, Joseph Gordon-Levitt broke his silence on the horrific incident.
"My most sincere sympathies go out to the families of the victims in Aurora," the thesp tweeted on Monday.
His statement echoes those of his co-stars, who have individually expressed their sadness over this tragedy. "My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act," Anne Hathaway said in a statement. "I am at a loss for words to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."
Gary Oldman also offered up his "prayers and deepest sympathies" to the victims and their families. And Batman himself, Christian Bale, stated, "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."
As the days creep along, and the court proceedings (and formal charges) get underway, there will surely be others to speak up — which can be a difficult thing when so many feel at a complete loss for words.
