Jonah Hill is trying so hard to get people to take him seriously that it seems it may only get worse from here.
It seems like it was only yesterday when the "Superbad" star and "21 Jump Street" star/producer refused to talk about farting, or his workout plan (which, um, we're not sure he's still on), or smoking weed, or anything else fun surrounding "This is the End." His co-stars were totally fun and funny in the same Rolling Stone cover story. Meanwhile, Hill has doubled down on his new "I'M A SERIOUS ACTOR" defensive/dick-y persona in a new interview with Bullet where he snorts: "Whatever, man. Scorsese thinks I'm awesome."
The entire profile is in-depth and well written, but for the ADD-ers out there, Salon was kind enough to cull some of the highlights:
"You can dis me all your want on a blog, or write whatever you want in this magazine and I'll just be like, 'Whatever, man. Scorsese thinks I'm awesome,'" he said, with a laugh. "He hired me and didn't fire me, so I can kind of not care now. It really did give me personal assurance that I'm doing the right thing and that I'm talented in certain ways because he's so important to me."
He also makes it clear that he's down with A-listers, and Vampire Weekend, too. You know, lest we think it's all Judd Apatow reunions at his crib.
"When Brad [Pitt] and Angie [Jolie] came to my birthday party last year, I think that was pretty shocking to a lot of people because that was at a small bar, but my birthday party this year was at my house and, um, some of the guys from 'The Wolf of Wall Street 'came over. My friends weren’t like, 'Oh my gosh! A famous person's here.' More than that, it was the actors there who were like, 'Man, it's so awesome how close you are with all these people who don’t give a f--- that you’re in movies or that anyone else is in movies.'"
Yes, Hill's ease around A-list stars and the fact that he still knows some people that aren't movie stars is proof positive of how down to earth he's remained. (Cough). "Because no one cared that Leo [DiCaprio] was there," he added.
To remind, some of the quotes in Rolling Stone included: "I'm not answering that dumb question! I'm not that kind of person! Being in a funny movies doesn't make me have to answer dumb questions" (in answer to a question about farting, which his co-stars were game to answer). When reminded it was for the "weed issue," Hill snipped: "I don't even smoke weed." (Hey, this writer doesn't either, but I also don't have a huge audience of stoners. Maybe give more than a five word answer?).
There's also this old chestnut, which went down on Twitter after Hill allegedly blew off CNN's Don Lemon. "I said hi," he Tweeted in reply. "[W]hat do you want me to do move in with you? I was in a hurry. Didn't realize you were a 12 year old girl. Peace.”
Is this a Joaquin Phoenix style fake out or something? It's sort of along the lines of the Larry the Cable Guy (aka Daniel Lawrence Whitney) or Carlos Mencia (Ned Arnel Mencia) or Fred Durst (William Frederick Durst) or Vanilla Ice (Robert Matthew Van Winkle) "you're just jealous/bitter/a hater" defense. But what is it exactly Jonah (Jonah Hill Feldstein) defending against? That Oscar nomination for "Moneyball" seemed well deserved. You're doing "The Wolf of Wall Street" with Leo and Marty? Good on ya'!
So what's the soon to be 30 year old so uptight about? That we all loved him in comedies? You can do comedies and drama, man, it's cool with us. Your co-stars still seem to love you. Chill, bro.
