Over the course of his long career, Johnny Depp has created some of the most unique, iconic and indelible performances in film history, from Edward Scissorhands to Captain Jack Sparrow and beyond.
And now that legacy will be recognized officially at the MTV Movie Awards, as the network has announced that Depp will be the latest recipient of their highest honor, the MTV Generation Award.
"Johnny Depp is a fearless, once-in-a-generation talent with a chameleon-like ability to inhabit any role," Stephen Friedman, President of MTV, said in a press release. "With years of astonishing performances, Johnny has truly earned this Generation Award, and we look forward to honoring him with a can't-miss tribute at this year's Movie Awards."
So what can fans expect during this once-in-a-lifetime tribute? Well, we don't want to spill all the beans just yet — hey, there need to be some surprises when you tune in Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET for the live broadcast — but we can reveal that The Black Keys will be on hand for a special live performance of their hit single "Gold on the Ceiling."
Previous winners of the MTV Generation Award include Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.
