Is the gang, finally, all here?
If Joel Edgerton thought playing a young Uncle Owen in George Lucas' "Star Wars" prequels was a trip, wait until he steps onto the set of Baz Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of "The Great Gatsby." The up-and-coming actor has scored the role of Tom Buchanan, according to Deadline.
Edgerton joins a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker.
The role of Tom Buchanan has been vacant since Ben Affleck had to turn it down due to conflicts with his next directing gig, "Argo."
Joel Edgerton had been rumored for several high-profile projects lately, including "Snow White and the Huntsman," "The Hunger Games" and "The Bourne Legacy." He apparently turned down the opportunity to star opposite Kristen Stewart in "Snow White" so he could be part of Kathryn Bigelow's untitled film depicting the hunt for Osama bin Laden.
With Edgerton being cast as Tom, the principal roles of "The Great Gatsby" have all been cast. Now just get some background performers in tuxedoes and dresses and let's start shooting!
Joel Edgerton will next be seen opposite Tom Hardy in "Warrior," opening Sept. 9, and opposite Mary Elizabeth Winstead in "The Thing," opening Oct. 14.
