Mr. Wright: Will Joe Wright Dominate '50 Shades of Grey'?

Vintage Vintage

Golden Globe-nominated director Joe Wright might be best-known for his book-to-screen adaptations of a more classical sort ("Anna Karenina," anyone?), but with so much, um, fan fervor surrounding "Fifty Shades of Grey" — not to mention all that cash money on the line — Universal Pictures might just be set to tap their go-to guy to wield the whip take the helm on the project.

Variety reports that while there's not an officially 100 percent set-in-stone deal in place just yet, Joe Wright has been chosen to make the mom porn movie happen.

Wright is best known for his work on "Pride & Prejudice," "Atonement" and "Hanna," all fine films, and it appears the studio and producers are hoping he'll be able to infuse things like "prestige" and "class" into the raunchy read.

That steamy esteem direction might have a little something to do with the way certain actresses have been publicly dissing the project. Emma Watson, for instance, web-scoffed at the very suggestion that she'd have anything to do with the movie. Even Keira Knightley, Joe Wright's three-time lead, dissed and dismissed the hypothetical opportunity. "You know, I normally don't like to give a definite about anything. I can definitely say it will not be 'Fifty Shades of Grey,'" she told MTV.

As for who will star as the submissive Anastasia Steele and her domineering-is-a-euphemism-for-this-man Christian Grey, the torturous search is on.

For those keeping score: Ellen DeGeneres is definitely out too, in a manner of speaking.
