James Franco Paints Mural Devoted To 'This Is The End' In Brooklyn

James Franco paints a mural in Brooklyn for 'This Is the End'

Of course he did.

In the most recent installment of Zach Galifianakis' internet talk show "Between Two Ferns," the comedian asked weirdo superstar James Franco, "Of all the art projects you've done, what has made people roll their eyes the hardest?" And you know what? It was a fair question. Franco has a restless creative spirit that often compels him to do really annoying stuff, like a "mixed media piece" for the Stella Adler studio called "Collage" (it supposedly combined dance, theater, music and poetry), publishing a book of poorly received short stories and hosting the Oscars.

While his latest project might not be quite as obnoxious, it is similarly arty and bizarre. On Saturday he painted a mural dedicated to the co-stars of his new movie "This Is The End." Franco even chose a perfect location for his new piece, one synonymous with arty nonsense: some random wall in Brooklyn.

Franco and a few assistants toiled away on the mural, which showcases Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson in squiggly cartoon form, on a wall in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. The name of the movie is plastered above their likenesses, along with some kind of demonic laughing face that we'll probably still be able to see when we close our eyes tonight. Shots from the painting session (captured by Gawker) show Franco also intensely looking at his phone, undoubtedly trying to figure out what song would best accompany something as utterly pointless as this.

If anyone thought this was a totally creative flight of fancy, please be aware that we are friends with a Sony publicist on Instagram and a photo of the mural popped up on her feed even before the Gawker photos hit. We just wonder what the trade-off was. Did they call him and offer this chance to paint this weird mural and in exchange he doesn't have to do Craig Ferguson or something? We'll know closer to the June 12th release of "This Is The End," which, admittedly, looks pretty cool.
