"Madness? This. Is. SPARTA."

Ha ha, it's still pretty funny, even four years later, isn't it?

Guy Ritchie thinks it's so funny that he might be laughing all the way to the bank, as the director of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (that's the official title of the "Sherlock Homes" sequel) has been offered the the chance to lead the charge on "Xerxes," the sequel to Frank Miller's "300," according to Vulture.

Like "300" before it, "Xerxes" was adapted and developed from a Frank Miller graphic novel by Zack Snyder. Snyder was originally set to direct the film, but now the gig has been offered to Ritchie. Why?

It's possible that Warner Bros. needs all of Snyder's attention on the "Superman" reboot, as WB loses the rights to the Man of Steel if a new Supes movie isn't in production by 2013. The rights would go back to the estates of original Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and re-licensing the franchise would cost a pretty penny indeed.

It might also be that WB might not be as in love with Snyder as they once were ("Watchmen" and "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole" did kind of underperform) and are now considering Ritchie to be their golden boy after "Sherlock Holmes" made a decent chunk of change (and kick-started a new franchise).

Whatever the reason, Ritchie has been offered the opportunity to go to war. We'll see if he's got enough bloodlust in him to accept the offer.
