'G.I Joe 3:' Making A Threequel Is the Other Half of the Battle

Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation Paramount

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" opened big this weekend, bringing in $51.7 million over the extended 5-day holiday frame and racking up a very healthy $132 million worldwide in its debut. So what do all those numbers mean, exactly? Well, according to Variety, they mean that Paramount has already decided to go ahead and start production on "G.I. Joe 3."

And we're just dying to see how they manage to fit Channing Tatum into this one.

Tatum, of course, was the star of the first "G.I. Joe" film and his involvement in "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" was heavily promoted in an attempt to capitalize on his newfound superstar status and bring all the girls to the yard. However, [Spoiler Alert!] considering that his character bites it in the first act of "G.I Joe: Retaliation," some fans are already complaining about the bait and switch tactics, which does make you wonder how the studio is going to smooth things over before the next sequel arrives.

Luckily, they have both time and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's artistically chiseled pectorals on their side. Our guess is that Paramount will do the same thing with the third film as they did with the second: Bring in a bunch of new big names to add star power to the proceedings. Besides Johnson, of course, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" also added Bruce Willis to the mix, so there's no telling who might be in the next one. Harrison Ford? Daniel Day-Lewis? Christopher Mintz-Plasse? The mind reels at the possibilities.

Still, those are questions for the future. For now, Paramount has to figure out details like writing a script and deciding who's going to direct it. And considering there was a four year gap between the last "G.I. Joe" movie and the current one, don't expect any major announcements any time soon. After all, if you rush into things, all sorts of mistakes could happen.

Just ask Channing Tatum fans.
