When news came out last week that redheaded hottie Emma Stone had been cast to play Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming "Spider-man" reboot, fans across the country rejoiced with a resounding "hell yeah!" Finally, it seemed, Sony had gotten the casting right by bringing on a fiery, spunky natural redhead for the role.
No offense to Kirsten Dunst, of course, but having a morose blonde play Mary Jane was just about as inexplicable as following it up by having the feisty redhead Bryce Dallas Howard play blonde daddy's girl Gwen Stacy in "Spider-man 3." Emma Stone as Mary Jane, though? Stroke of genius.
Don't look now, Spidey fans, but Collider is now reporting that Stone isn't going to be playing Mary Jane at all, but rather will be taking on the role of Gwen Stacy. Let the fanboy headscratching commence.
Not that hair color is really that big a deal, of course; a little dye can totally change an actor's looks, something reinforced by the fact that -- news flash -- Stone is actually a natural blonde to begin with. Who knew, right? And we're also sure that Stone will do a bang-up job as Stacy, given that she's one of the coolest -- and hottest -- actresses in Hollywood right now thanks to her headturning roles in films like "Zombieland" and "Easy A."
But darn, she seemed like such a perfect Mary Jane. Plus, everyone knows how the Gwen Stacy story ends -- with her being thrown to her death off the Brooklyn Bridge by the Green Goblin -- and that's just a major bummer. Still, we're looking forward to seeing the chemistry between Stone and the new Peter Parker, "The Social Network's" Andrew Garfield, when "Spider-man" hits theaters in 2012.
Then we'll see if blondes do have more fun.
