What, was Anthony Michael Hall not available?
Russell 'Rusty' Griswold is all grown up and looking a lot like Ed Helms as the "Hangover" star will be hitting the holiday road this summer to shoot a new sequel to "National Lampoon's Vacation."
Rusty is, of course, the son of original "Vacation" patriarch Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), a character played by no less than four different actors in previous "Vacation" installments: Anthony Michael Hall in "Vacation" (1983), Jason Lively in "European Vacation" (1985), Johnny Galecki in "Christmas Vacation" (1989) and Ethan Embry in "Vegas Vacation" (1997). In this new "Vacation," he'll be taking his own family on a road trip that's bound to have a few ... complications.
Writers-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein revealed the plans to shoot the currently untitled sequel this summer in a recent interview with Collider.
"We're shooting in June in Atlanta and in New Mexico," Daley confirmed, with Goldstein adding that we can expect other casting news fairly soon. "Rusty Griswold is grown up, and that's Ed Helms. We're casting the other parts now and it's pretty exciting."
One of those "other parts" is probably Rusty's dear old dad, as there's no way Chevy Chase won't be making at least a cameo in this. We imagine Beverly D'Angelo will also be back as Rusty's mother -- and don't count out the possibility that someone like Kristen Wiig could pop up as sister Audrey.
Just no Randy Quaid as Cousin Eddie, okay? Thanks, guys.
Expect the new "Vacation" to hit theaters sometime in 2014. Even sooner, Ed Helms will be seen on another holiday road in "The Hangover Part III," opening May 24.
