What The?! New 'Star Wars' Movie In the Works?

Well, we certainly didn't expect to hear this kind of news, like, ever.

First of all, Disney just bought Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion dollars, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That's right, Mickey Mouse now owns the rights to the "Star Wars" franchise. Hey, it kind of makes sense — there's that Star Tours ride at Disneyland and all.

And let's just repeat that number, for the record, shall we? 4.05 billion dollars. George Lucas is wearing mouse ears and laughing maniacally right about now.

Second of all, now that Disney owns all the goings-on in a galaxy far, far away, "Star Wars: Episode VII" is officially in development and on track for 2015 (just in time to compete with Disney's own "Avengers" sequel). Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chair of Lucasfilm, will become Lucasfilm's president and will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George serving as "creative consultant."

Whoa. A new "Star Wars" feature film? And, even more shocking ... one without the 20th Century Fox logo before it to get the audience all riled up?

We may need some time to process all of this ...

George talked about relinquishing control of "Star Wars" (a huge step for the notorious revisionist and post-mortem tinkerer) in an official statement.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see 'Star Wars' passed from one generation to the next," he said. "It’s now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that 'Star Wars' could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.

"I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, 'Star Wars' will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."

This will be a day long remembered, indeed.
