Danny Boyle Laying Down Track(marks) for 'Trainspotting 2'

Ewan McGregor in "Trainspotting" Miramax

After years of getting badgered about it at every press junket he's ever attended, Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire") may finally be ready to dive back into the worst toilet in Scotland for "Trainspotting 2."

Doing press for his upcoming James McAvoy heist thriller "Trance," Boyle responded to the perennial question from The Playlist with renewed optimism for a 2016 (20th anniversary) release, which is more solid than when he last spoke of it in 2010.

"This has been a long time coming," Boyle said. "There's always been this long term plan for 'Trainspotting 2,' if John can produce a decent enough script, I don't think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back," he said. "I think they'll wanna know that the parts are good so they don't feel like they are letting anyone down."

"I don't think there will be any barriers" is, of course, doublespeak for "Most of these guy's careers have tanked." Indeed, with the resounding failure of "Jack the Giant Slayer," Ewan McGregor may just consider going from killing giants to "chasing the dragon" again.

Boyle is very concerned with living up to expectations, given the reverence fans have for 1996 heroin chic classic, but he and original screenwriter John Hodge plan to diverge greatly from Irvine Welsh's poorly received sequel novel "Porno."

"It's very loosely based on 'Porno,'" he reluctantly confirmed. "There's a couple of things that are based on the book, but obviously we'd have to have Irvine on board."
