'Hunger Games' Team Takes Cyrano de Bergerac

Simon & Schuster

If you're like us, you've got some pretty weird friends on Facebook. You know what we mean; there's always that one guy who sends you a friend request even though he's only, like, the ex-boyfriend of that girl you worked with at Orange Julius for a week during summer break. Social media brings together even the most unlikely pairings. Case in point?

Katniss Everdeen has just friended Cyrano de Bergerac.

Really: according to The Hollywood Reporter, the team behind the upcoming adaptation of "The Hunger Games" is about to take on new project -- an updated version of "Cyrano de Bergerac" set in the world of social media.

"Cyrano de Bergerac," of course, is the classic play by Edmund Rostrand about a real guy from the 17th century who was renowned for fighting duels over the size of his enormous nose. In the play, which has previously been modernized in films such as "Roxanne," de Bergerac uses his writing skills to win the heart of his dream girl -- only, he does it on behalf of another dude, leading to angst and heartbreak all around.

And if there's one thing social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are great at, it's sowing angst, which is probably why "Hunger Games" director Gary Ross and producer Nina Jacobson have decided to take the story of Cyrano de Bergerac and adapt it for today's smartphone crowd.

No word yet on when "Cyrano de Bergerac" will get underway, but it probably won't be for awhile; Ross and Jacobson, after all, are just about to begin filming on "The Hunger Games" for a projected March 23, 2012 release. In the mean time, keep an eye on your friend list.

Because you never know when a stranger is just trying to stick their nose into your business.
