Charlie Hunnam Finally Explains Going Soft on '50 Shades of Grey'

There's been a lot of speculation over why Charlie Hunnam decided not to put on a slick suit and pick up the whip for "Fifty Shades of Grey" — especially since one peek at his "Queer as Folk" days proved he's, uh, not at all shy about gettin' busy for the cameras — but now the actor himself has finally spoken up with his side of things.

Apparently, it wasn't all those ravenous anti-him-as-Christian Grey petitioners or that supposedly bogus paycheck which made him flaccid on the pic, but rather his obligation to be a good family man? What.

Speaking to E! Online at a recent charity event, Hunnam reportedly revealed that the passing of his father in May of this year has taken its toll on his family and that he's been putting all his focus on that and the conclusion of his long-time TV series "Sons of Anarchy."

So, basically, he's not got time to worry about any of that S&M movie business?

"I have had some family stuff going on so just trying to stay focused and stay positive and keep trying to do a good job at work and be with my family and stay positive," he said.

He's also got another movie prospect on the horizon that might be a little less risqué than a turn as the billionaire sex fiend.

"When I wrap the show, I am going to go to England and see my people and then I have a film that I am doing with Guillermo [del Toro], another film that I've been scheduled to do for the last year," he added. "Right when we wrapped 'Pacific Rim,' Guillermo and I had a wonderful time on that collaborating together, and he signed on to do this movie and said right away, 'I'd love to you come on and be a part of it.' So, I am going to go and do that and then concentrate on the final seasons of 'Sons.' It's obviously going to be a really emotional time for us, we're like a family ... I just want to finish that strong and then go on to a new chapter of life."

When the announcement came down that Charlie Hunnam was stepping away from 'Fifty Shades,' the official statement indicated that he and the studio agreed for him to bounce "given Hunnam's immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey."

Rumors swirled soon after that Hunnam was uncomfortable with all the "Fifty Shades" frenzy — basically, he couldn't just ignore it and deal like Ben Affleck — and that the "Sons" excuse was just that ... an excuse. So, what do you make of Hunnams words, then?

"Fifty Shades," which will feature Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 1, 2014. So, a new Christian Grey should come surface fairly soon. A new fan-favorite for the role, supposedly, is British TV hunk Jamie Dornan, which ... check him out.
