The Top 2 Movies of 2013

The Last Stand Lionsgate

It's been said that January and February are dumping grounds for awful movies, and sure, history tells us that box office performance is generally weak during the first couple months of the year.

But we say the curse is finally broken, as the two best movies of 2013 so far have hit theaters.

What's that? 2013 is only four weeks old and there's basically no competition? What's your point?

Without further ado, nigh on the first weekend of February, here are the two best movies of the year.

2. 'The Last Stand'

Those eight years Arnold Schwarzenegger spent serving California were eight years he neglected the rest of us. At long last, The Governator has put down the state Constitution and picked up the heavy artillery in this perfectly serviceable action-packed Western. However Schwarzenegger's constituents felt about his tenure in office, we feel relieved to know he keeps his promises — at least on the big screen: He said he'd be back. And he is.

And finally, the No. 1 movie of 2013 so far...

1. 'Warm Bodies'

Zombie rom-com? What? It sounds implausible — we're expected to watch a romance bloom between a living girl and a sentient, rotting corpse ... without getting sick? — but in the hands of director Jonathan Levine, anything is possible.

After all, this is the guy who actually pulled off a "cancer comedy" in 2011 ("50/50").

The charm of lead actor Nicholas Hoult and strength of his beautiful co-star Teresa Palmer don't hurt, but it's Levine's direction, the weirdly wonderful source material from novelist Isaac Marion and whoever picked the amazing soundtrack that really bring these zombie shenanigans to life.
