First Glimpse at 'Avengers' Follow-up 'Item 47' Is a Blast ... of Laser

Marvel

Ever wonder what happens after an epic superhero battle leaves some hefty collateral damage in its wake?

Earth's Mightiest Heroes certainly left a pretty big mess behind when they went to get their post-victory shawarma in "The Avengers," and Entertainment Weekly has your first glimpse at the poster for "Item 47," Marvel's 12-minute-long follow-up that shows the consequences of Joss Whedon not picking up his toys after he's done playing.

Lizzy Caplan ("Party Down") and Jesse Bradford ("Flags of Our Fathers") star as a down-on-their-luck couple who scrounge up a discarded alien gun abandoned by some pulverized Chitauri. With the weapon at their disposal, they proceed to get their Bonnie and Clyde on and rob some banks. Take that, Wall Street fat cats!

Two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, played by Maximiliano Hernández and Titus Welliver, have to trudge through the wreckage of New York to recover the weapon before these two do something really stupid with it.

A week ago, EW premiered an image of Caplan lookin' large and in charge with that laser gun, but the poster really tries to create direct continuity with "The Avengers" poster by making it the exact same image sans Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, et al.

You shouldn't expect anyone from that coterie of heroes to make an appearance in "Item 47," as those actors are only contracted for so many sequels and Marvel would pitch a fit if a 30-second cameo in a one-off short cost them an extra 10-million for Chris Evans once "Captain America 4: Bucky Lives!" comes around.

If you're attending Comic-Con in San Diego this week you can download the free "Avengers Second Screen" app from iTunes to follow a trail of breadcrumbs Marvel is leaving to get you to an exclusive "Item 47" premiere screening. Happy hunting!
