Ashton Kutcher to Play Steve Jobs ... and It's Not an April Fool's Joke

Checking the news on April Fool's Day can be a real challenge, as even the most reputable and respectable websites will sometimes still post one or two joke columns; no doubt your Facebook and Twitter accounts were blowing up yesterday with stories that were just too good to be true.

Sometimes, though, even on April Fool's Day there are stories that are just too ridiculous to be fake and here's a prime example for you: According to Variety, Ashton Kutcher has signed on to play Steve Jobs in the new indie biopic "Jobs." Hard to believe, but you are not being punk'd.

At first glance, of course, this casting seems a bit odd, but when you take a second look — and squint — the idea of the "Two and a Half Men" star playing one of the most iconic and revered geniuses in modern history isn't so crazy. After all, in Variety's words, Jobs was a "wayward hippie" in his pre-Apple days, something Kutcher should have no problem pulling off. And he did get some positive buzz for his acting chops in the 2007 drama "Bobby."

Of course, he also won the Razzie last year for Worst Actor, so there's that. But you know, we think skeptics should give Kutcher and director Joshua Michael Stern ("Swing Vote") the benefit of the doubt here. After all, if there's one thing Jobs highlighted better than maybe anybody in recent memory, it was the power of reinvention.

And that's no joke.
