Anna Kendrick Is the Unsung Twi-Hard Hero

The irony in Twi-hardism is that the people we admire most aren't remotely like us. If Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone didn't star in "The Twilight Saga," would they even know we exist? No. Guys with abs like that are too busy in the gym or with their rock bands to spend think about movies based on romantic YA novels. Real Twi-hards sport abs like mine.

That is no slight against them. Heck, it's a large part of the reason we adore them. Their glamorous lives as "the popular kids" help us escape the mundane parts of our lives: school, work cubicles, taxes, diets, etc.

The fandom around Anna Kendrick, on the other hand, is different. Only the hardcore truly appreciate her. Despite her obvious talent and natural humor, Kendrick too often flies under the radar. While she may be up on stage at at a "Twilight" convention, she'd fit in just fine as part of the crowd -- because the costar of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is a geek like us.

It's not just because Kendrick plays the hyper-driven valedictorian Jessica Stanley in "The Twilight Saga." She's actually a geek, in the truest sense of the word. Here are four reasons we, as Twi-hards, should embrace Anna Kendrick. She's one of us. And in five years, with her potential and talent, she may just be the most famous name from the series. Score one for the geeks.

Hails From Maine

Anna Kendrick didn't become a child actor because she grew up in Hollywood like Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed. She grew up in Portland, Maine (that's not even the hip Portland), and became a drama geek at 10 years old. After she and her brother kept pestering her parents, they started allowing them to take the bus to auditions in New York City -- more than six hours away. After a couple years, she got her start on Broadway. If she had grown up in Ohio, she could just as easily be a character in "Glee."

Her Twitter Feed

While @AnnaKendrick47 hasn't been updated since December 31, the feed tells you everything you need to know about her geekery. First, Anna describes herself as "Pale, awkward and very very small. Form an orderly queue, gents." Many of her tweets have the self-deprecating humor of "Daria": "Just shot the least sexy same-sex shower scene since Eastern Promises"; "Going around in my head: *nerdy girls, you are attracted to us!* Failing to contain dorky bounce"; "Dear 90% of stuff at American Apparel, are we supposed to actually wear you in public or are you just hipster themed fetish gear?"

Geeky Obsessions

Even though Kendrick is a part of the Hollywood machine, she still geeks out on TV and movies. She spends her sick days with "TV box set marathons. Breaking Bad/Game of Thrones/Mad Men." In interviews, instead of promoting her own projects, she'll nerd out over British comedy. The London Telegraph reported that in an interview, she "talks excitedly about Harry Hill, Stewart Lee, Bill Bailey, QI and sitcoms 'Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace' and 'The Mighty Boosh.'"

Dates Edgar Wright

Her obscure fandom of British comedy makes her a perfect match with her boyfriend, director Edgar Wright. Wright is a 38-year-old god among movie geeks and British comedy buffs for his work with the TV series "Spaced" and movies "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz" and "Attack the Block." The two met on the set of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and have been dating ever since. While Wright certainly has his allegiance of fans, he's no R.Pattz and wouldn't stand out in a Twi-hard crowd -- just like Kendrick.
