When CompuServe introduced the GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) in 1987, there's no way the company could have guessed that one day, its technology would be used primarily to make celebrities appear to hump one another, or mash the Power Rangers up with teen vampires.
CompuServe just wanted to provide a color image format for its file downloading areas. But with the advent of the Internet "meme," GIFs have spun out of control, like MP3 downloads or free Asian porn.
The following 20 "Twilight"-inspired images perfectly encapsulate the wide swath of animated GIFs on the Internet in 2011. (They also confirm my theory that almost everything in life can be explained through "Twilight" references.)
First came the basic and easily done Favorite Scenes category, which is exactly what it sounds like. Second, fans got a little more creative and sought out Behind the Scenes footage. These are a little harder to create, but employ the same simple premise as Favorite Scenes.
Next, Internet creatives realized that it's fairly simple to make it seem like two actors are humping if you just alternate a few images back and forth. These I've dubbed Humpers (clever, I know). The Jokes category comes after, where users typically incorporate a punchy buzz word into the mix, making it slightly more advanced than Humping.
The Memes category took off like wildfire a few years ago; here it's standard to give every character on Earth a catchphrase, like "I'm a Virgin" or "OMG!" Finally, the most advanced animated GIFs are Mash-Ups, where the faces of characters in a famous movie scenes are replaced with prettier ones from "Twilight."
Enjoy the following funny and weird "Twilight" GIFs and congratulate yourself on learning something today about computer programming and trends -- even if it won't actually make you any smarter.
