'Animal House' Is Relocating to Broadway

If you're like us, every time you watch the John Belushi classic "National Lampoon's Animal House," you probably think to yourself, "This is great, but if only it had a score written by the Barenaked Ladies."

Well, guess the F what.

Yes, the day you never expected to see -- mainly because it's pretty hard to predict something quite this weird -- is here.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that not only is "Animal House" being adapted as a Broadway musical, the original score is going to be written entirely by those Canadian indie/pop/rap (?) icons The Barenaked Ladies. Yep.

Now, for those of you who have been in a coma since 1999, this will probably come as little surprise, considering the Barenaked Ladies were pretty much on top of the indie rock scene back then thanks to hits like "One Week" and "If I Had a Million Dollars." Since then, though, the band has been keeping somewhat of a lower profile.

And now we know why: They were apparently working behind the scenes with playwright Michael Mitnick to adapt Belushi's 1978 hit for the stage. Which sounds weird at first, until you consider some of the other, even crazier adaptations being done for Broadway (we're looking at you, "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark"). So it's only fitting that Casey Nicholaw, who was nominated for a Tony award for choreographing the oddest adaptation of all -- "The Book of Mormon" -- is on board for this one as director.

Food fights, Mormons and Barenaked Ladies. Come to think of it, sounds like just another night on 42nd Street after all.
